IRS Increases Focus on Employer and Employment Tax Audits

Posted in Press Releases on September 25, 2012 | Share

The IRS increases employment tax audits into businesses and employers. Kevin E. Thorn, Managing Partner of the Thorn Law Group and former IRS attorney, comments on the risks businesses and employers may face when audited by the IRS.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 25, 2012 - The IRS’s National Research Program (NRP) is the first of its kind in 25 years and will place emphasis on worker classification, officer compensation, fringe benefits, and employee expense reimbursement. This initiative demonstrates the IRS’s further focus on attacking the underpayment of taxes by businesses and operates to ensure compliance by businesses and individuals.

Kevin E. Thorn, Managing Partner of Thorn Law Group, a law firm that specializes in representing individual taxpayers, businesses, partnerships and other entities throughout the Nation who are under civil and criminal audit by the IRS, states, “The IRS’s National Research Program is committed to bringing small and large businesses alike into compliance. Businesses as well as individual employers that are not currently in compliance are at risk of an audit.” Mr. Thorn further states, “Employment audits can lead to severe civil penalties and even criminal charges against individuals if businesses do not comply with federal employment tax laws.”

Among the taxes and penalties that could be assessed civilly, a business’s failure to comply with federal and state employment tax laws can lead to IRS liens or levies against business assets and even criminal charges against individuals responsible for the failure to pay employment taxes. Mr. Thorn urges businesses under or at risk for civil tax audit to contact an attorney experienced in employment tax matters before meeting with any IRS employee.
