IRS Whistleblower Office

The IRS Whistleblower Office, processes tips it receives from individuals who spot tax fraud or other tax problems in their workplace, while conducting day-to-day personal business or anywhere else they may be encountered.

Persons who report tax problems to the IRS are eligible to receive an award worth between 15 and 30 percent of the total proceeds that the IRS collects if the IRS moves ahead based on the information provided.  Awards are only given to people who provide specific and credible information to the IRS.  The Whistleblower Office is responsible for assessing and analyzing incoming tips. After determining their degree of credibility, the case will be assigned to the appropriate IRS office for further investigation.
